- This cross-sectional study investigated the efficacy of utilizing layered base plate blocks for training dental students in cavity preparation. The two primary goals of the project were to determine if the learning tool increased technical skill level and elevated students’ confidence. The research compared the work of 52 participants from two consecutive class years divided into 2 equal groups; one trained using a layered base plate block (2013) and the other without (2012). Each student prepared one first molar tooth for a class I cavity and two first molar teeth for a class II cavity. Mann-Whitney U-tests were used by the examiners to compare median scores for the preparations. An 8-item Likert scale survey developed by one of the authors was administered to the students to assess self-perceived confidence in the exercises. The dataset includes assessment criteria, performance scores, and survey responses.
